1. What is counselling?
According to the American Counseling Association (ACA), professional counseling is the process of building relationships with individuals that empower them to accomplish mental health and wellness, education, and career goals. It is a collaborative relationship between the counselor and their client.
Professional counseling can take the form of:
- Individual counseling is the most common type of counseling that focuses on the growth and mental health of an individual.
- Couples or marriage counseling focuses on assisting couples in overcoming conflict and working towards a stronger relationship.
- Family counseling involves the different familial dynamics and how they affect the family structure.
- Group counseling is the use of group interaction to facilitate growth.
2. Who is a counsellor?
A Counsellor is a professional who is specialized in helping clients to develop better cognitive and emotional skills, reduce symptoms of mental illness, and cope with various life challenges to improve their lives.
3. How counselling helps for the wellness of mental health?
The emotional awareness and insight that the person gains through counselling and psychotherapy often results in a change in attitude and behaviour that allows the person to live a fuller and more satisfying life. Psychotherapy is appropriate and effective in a wide range of mental health conditions.
4. Can I choose Counselling as a career?
WHO estimates that about 7.5 percent of Indians suffer from some mental disorder and predicts that by the end of this year(2022) roughly 20 percent of India will suffer from mental illnesses. According to the numbers, 56 million Indians suffer from depression and another 38 million Indians suffer from anxiety disorders.
